OpenAI recently announced a significant advancement for developers working on artificial intelligence projects. By introducing a new Codex tab in the ChatGPT mobile app, OpenAI now allows users to manage their AI coding projects directly from their phones. This new mobile interface aims to reduce the time spent in front of a laptop, which is often left slightly open to allow Codex agents to operate.
OpenAI developers shared on X: "Step away from your laptop," highlighting a recent trend where users move around with their laptops open. The announcement made on Thursday specifies that Codex is now accessible via the ChatGPT mobile app. Although direct programming on the phone is not possible, users can ask Codex to start a new project, manage and view the agent's actions, while continuing to work remotely on their computer or Mac Mini.
With this mobile app, users have the ability to see discussion threads, review results, approve commands, and switch models. In other words, it offers better remote control of Codex, which could encourage developers to leave their laptops at home or in the office more often.
OpenAI also published a blog post explaining that as agents take on longer-duration tasks, a new rhythm of collaboration is emerging. To maintain workflow, it is essential to be able to easily respond to a question, review what Codex has found, change direction, approve next steps, or add a new idea.
The emergence of AI coding tools has led to an increase in the number of people moving around with their laptops slightly open, allowing their local Codex agent to continue functioning. AI coders told Business Insider that they bring these open laptops to various locations such as offices, schools, and even ice rinks. However, this trend quickly became a meme, which OpenAI participated in earlier this month by teasing: "iykyk but we might have a surprise soon 👀."
Before Thursday's announcement, OpenAI also poked fun at this trend of open laptops in a video posted on the X account of its developers. The video showed several laptops open just enough to stay on, with the message: "Step away from your laptop. Keep building with Codex on your phone."
