Fidji Simo Steps Back at OpenAI for Health Reasons
Fidji Simo, who joined OpenAI in the summer of 2025, recently announced that she is taking a leave of absence for a few weeks to manage a relapse of her autoimmune disease. This decision was made to allow her to focus on her health, while Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, will oversee product strategy during her absence.
This break marks a significant pause for Fidji Simo, an influential figure in Silicon Valley. As the CEO in charge of applications at OpenAI, she has decided to temporarily step away from her responsibilities to prioritize her treatment. She plans to return to her duties after a few weeks of rest and care.
In 2019, Fidji Simo was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, an autoimmune condition that causes symptoms such as heart palpitations and dizziness. Facing a relapse, she has chosen to pursue new treatments during this leave.
In a message to OpenAI staff on April 3, Fidji Simo explained that she had postponed her medical care to fully dedicate herself to her work. She acknowledged that she had reached her limits and needed to stabilize her health before resuming her role.
Reorganization of OpenAI's Leadership Team
Fidji Simo's temporary withdrawal has led to a swift reorganization within OpenAI. Greg Brockman, the company's president, has taken charge of product strategy, while other responsibilities have been redistributed. Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer, and Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer, have taken on key roles to keep the company on track.
At the same time, OpenAI is also dealing with the departure of Kate Rouch, Chief Marketing Officer, who is stepping down due to cancer. Brad Lightcap, meanwhile, has left his position as Chief Operating Officer to focus on special projects, reporting directly to Sam Altman.
This reorganization comes at a crucial time for OpenAI, as the company faces intense competition in the large language model (LLM) market. To strengthen its position, OpenAI recently raised $122 billion, bringing its valuation to $852 billion.
Fierce Competition with Anthropic
The competition between OpenAI and its main rival, Anthropic, is intensifying. In February, Anthropic raised $30 billion, reaching a valuation of $380 billion. Additionally, Anthropic recently announced that it has surpassed OpenAI in terms of annualized revenue, achieving $30 billion compared to OpenAI's $24 billion.
This turning point in the rivalry between the two companies could have significant repercussions, especially as both plan to go public this year. If these IPOs materialize, they could set new records in the market.
