OpenAI recently informed its investors that its early development of computing infrastructure gives it a strategic advantage over its competitor Anthropic. This statement comes as the competition for supremacy in the field of artificial intelligence intensifies, particularly regarding technological capabilities.
In a memo addressed to investors, OpenAI emphasized that its ability to quickly and consistently add computing resources allows it to better meet the growing demand for its AI products. This strategy, although criticized for its high cost, is presented as a key element of OpenAI's superiority over Anthropic.
The memo is likely a response to Anthropic's announcement of a more powerful AI model called Mythos. This model will initially be available only to selected partners through the Glasswing project for security reasons. However, some observers wonder if Anthropic could even deploy such a vast model effectively with its current computing capacity.
Speculation is circulating that Mythos could be the first model with 10 trillion parameters. This speculation is partly based on public statements by Elon Musk indicating that xAI is currently training a model of that size. It also relies on benchmarks shared by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, showing how quickly a new Vera Rubin system could train future 10 trillion parameter models. Following this logic, OpenAI would have an advantage as it could more easily manage the demand for powerful models like the upcoming 'Spud'. In practice, however, most clients would likely have access to distilled and smaller versions of these models.
Anthropic and Its AI Chip Ambitions
For its part, Anthropic is exploring the possibility of designing its own AI chips to reduce its reliance on Google and Amazon. According to Reuters, this initiative is still in its early stages, with no dedicated team or concrete design. However, it is motivated by the ongoing shortage of AI chips, prompting Anthropic to consider in-house solutions.
Currently, Anthropic uses a mix of Google TPUs and Amazon chips to operate its chatbot Claude. The company recently signed a long-term agreement with Google and Broadcom as part of a commitment to invest $50 billion in computing infrastructure in the United States.
Designing an advanced AI chip costs about $500 million, according to industry sources. Meta and OpenAI are also reportedly pursuing similar efforts, according to Reuters. Anthropic declined to comment.
Suspension of OpenAI's Stargate Project in the UK
Meanwhile, OpenAI has decided to suspend its Stargate data center project in the UK. This decision is attributed to high energy costs and an unfavorable regulatory environment. The project, launched in September 2025 in partnership with Nvidia and Nscale, coincided with a visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to the UK, generating a total of £150 billion in investment commitments. The project aimed to strengthen the UK's sovereign computing capacity and accelerate AI adoption across the country.
Despite this suspension, OpenAI remains optimistic about the future of AI in the UK and plans to resume the project when conditions are more favorable. London continues to host the company's largest international research center.
