OpenAI recently announced the long-awaited launch of its ChatGPT desktop application for the Linux operating system. This initiative responds to strong demand from the open-source developer community, which wanted to see OpenAI's chatbot integrated into their work environment.
According to OpenAI, Linux was one of the most requested platforms for the desktop application. With this launch, ChatGPT and Codex are now accessible on all major desktop operating systems, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of these tools.
The application, currently in a preliminary version, allows Linux users to access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex across multiple distributions. The global rollout began last Tuesday.
Supported Linux distributions include the desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, as well as Fedora 43 and 44. Although the Linux community comprises hundreds of distributions, those selected by OpenAI serve as the foundation for many other "downstream" distributions, which should also be compatible with OpenAI's applications.
This launch comes after Anthropic, which released its Claude desktop application for Linux about a month ago. Anthropic's application is available for Ubuntu 22.04 or newer and Debian 12 or newer, putting OpenAI slightly behind its direct competitor in the race for integration on Linux.
