OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens, a distinct version of its service designed for 13 to 17-year-olds. This setup adds study tools and enhanced protections, with automatic activation based on the declared or detected age. OpenAI also states that it will evolve this service with new features.
Learning Features: Study Mode, quizzes, and visualizations
OpenAI tailors ChatGPT for Teens to support adolescent learning. The Study Mode guides the user step-by-step through problem-solving, rather than providing the answer directly. If the AI detects a request for an immediate solution to an assignment, it can direct the user to this mode. Quizzes and educational visualizations are offered to assist with exam preparation. Teens or their parents can set study time blocks during which the Study Mode activates automatically. OpenAI plans to add new features to this service.
Enhanced protections against harmful content and dependency
ChatGPT for Teens reduces exposure to content deemed harmful or inappropriate for adolescent development. OpenAI has adjusted its models to avoid behaviors that could create emotional dependency on the AI. The company specifies that ChatGPT should not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependency, or imply that it feels emotions or possesses consciousness. Regular reminders prompt the user to take a break, and an indicator reminds them that they are interacting with an artificial intelligence.
Automatic activation, parental controls, and positioning against competitors
ChatGPT for Teens is a distinct version of ChatGPT, automatically activated when the user declares they are between 13 and 17 years old or when algorithms estimate they are under 18. OpenAI already offers parental controls to oversee family use. In comparison, Anthropic, the creator of Claude, prohibits access to its AI for those under 18. OpenAI claims to want to support the learning and creativity of teens while ensuring appropriate protections.
