OpenAI has unveiled its latest model, GPT-5.6, less than 24 hours after announcing that it would space out the release of its next model at the request of the Trump administration. This launch comes amid increasing regulatory tensions surrounding artificial intelligence in the United States.
On Friday, OpenAI introduced a limited version of its new suite of models, GPT-5.6. Among these models are Sol, the flagship model designed for optimal performance; Terra, an intermediate model intended for high-volume tasks; and Luna, a fast and cost-effective model for everyday use.
GPT-5.6 stands out for its advanced capabilities in several key areas, including coding, cybersecurity, and biology. It is also designed to excel in long-term agentic AI tasks, providing sustained focus on complex projects.
In terms of pricing, OpenAI offers GPT-5.6 Sol at a competitive rate of $5 per million tokens for input and $30 for output. This price is nearly half that of Claude Fable 5 from Anthropic, which charges $10 for input and $5 for output.
