OpenAI recently announced a new feature for its coding agent Codex, which could potentially disrupt the artificial intelligence market. Users can now accumulate their rate limit resets and use them at their convenience. These limits, which define the frequency of service usage over a given period, previously reset automatically.
Users of the various plans, namely Go, Plus, Pro, and Business, each benefit from an initial free reset. Additionally, users on the Plus and Pro plans have the option to invite up to three friends to try Codex over the next two weeks. When an invited friend sends their first message via Codex, both parties receive an additional reset.
OpenAI justifies this change by citing increased user demand for greater flexibility. However, this initiative could also signal the beginning of a price war with Anthropic, another major player in the field. In light of a recent rise in AI-related costs, OpenAI may consider lowering its token prices to attract customers from Anthropic. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently emphasized at an event that AI costs represent a "huge problem" for businesses.
