OpenAI Targets the Latin American Advertising Market
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has decided to expand its reach by introducing advertisements on its platform in Brazil and Mexico. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening ChatGPT's presence in the global market and diversifying its revenue sources.
Evolving Advertising Tools
To support this expansion, OpenAI has significantly enhanced its advertising tools. The company is experimenting with new ad formats and innovative integrations. This move comes as ChatGPT has recently crossed the impressive milestone of one billion active users. OpenAI is striving to transform this user base into a lucrative opportunity by building an advertising business from the ground up.
Rapid and Strategic Expansion
According to an email sent to advertisers, OpenAI plans to launch these advertisements in Brazil and Mexico in the coming days. These two countries join a list of already active markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Since July, OpenAI has allowed advertisers to target users in specific geographic areas, which could enhance the effectiveness of campaigns.
Innovative Ads for ChatGPT Users
ChatGPT users, whether on the Free or Go plans, are beginning to see new forms of advertisements, including product carousels. These carousels are currently limited to a single advertiser, unlike those from Google, which often feature multiple brands. This approach could provide a more targeted and less cluttered user experience.
Improved Measurement and Tracking Tools
OpenAI has also announced significant updates to its tracking and measurement tools for advertising campaigns. Advertisers can now optimize their campaigns for specific conversions, such as sales or sign-ups. Additionally, OpenAI has partnered with Hightouch and Triple Whale, two companies specializing in advertising technology, to offer better capabilities for measuring campaign success.
Towards "Sponsored Agents"?
Although not explicitly mentioned in the latest email, OpenAI is considering deploying "sponsored agents." These agents, defined in a policy document updated on July 31, would allow users to interact with AI-generated representatives for specific companies or products. This could represent a new direction for ads based on generative AI.
A Priority for OpenAI
According to Juozas Kaziukėnas, a market observer in e-commerce, changes in ChatGPT's advertising tool are frequent and rapid. He emphasizes that the development of this advertising product is clearly a priority for OpenAI. Kaziukėnas sees potential in brands adopting AI-native advertising formats, although it remains to be seen whether this will meet the expectations of advertisers, who are often seeking traffic to their sites.
A Major Challenge Against Giants
Despite the growing popularity of ChatGPT, OpenAI faces a significant challenge. In May, the company revealed that its annual recurring advertising revenue reached $100 million. This figure is still far from the $294 billion generated by Google and the $196 billion from Meta last year. Therefore, OpenAI must innovate to compete with these giants of digital advertising.
