OpenAI Ventures into Hardware with a Phone for ChatGPT
OpenAI may soon enter the hardware market with a phone specifically designed for ChatGPT. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a supply chain analyst, this project is in advanced development, with mass production expected to begin in early 2027.
A Custom MediaTek Chip
OpenAI's phone is expected to be equipped with a customized version of the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 processor, which is set to launch this fall. This processor succeeds the Dimensity 9500, currently used in models like the Vivo X300 Pro and the Oppo Find X9 Pro. The chip will stand out with its image signal processor (ISP) featuring enhanced HDR, optimizing the phone's visual detection capabilities.
Advanced Technical Features
In addition to its innovative ISP, the phone may incorporate LPDDR6 memory, UFS 5.0 storage, and a dual NPU architecture. This configuration would allow for the simultaneous management of various artificial intelligence tasks, including language processing and vision.
Ambitious Sales Goals
Kuo predicts that combined sales of OpenAI's phone for 2027-2028 could reach around 30 million units. This ambitious figure would place OpenAI's phone in direct competition with flagship smartphones from Samsung, marking a significant challenge for the company's first hardware product.
