OpenAI introduces a Pro 500 tier at $500 per month and adjusts its Pro offering, while initially reserving its Dots agents for premium plans. The management promises access to a base of 1.2 billion users but provides no timeline or pricing for this stage.
Pro 500 at $500 per month, Ultrafast computing announced
OpenAI is launching a Pro 500 subscription at $500 per month, or $6,000 per year, which offers the highest usage allocation. This plan includes Ultrafast computing for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, announced to be up to eight times faster. Meanwhile, the Pro plan at $200 per month is being reopened with a reduced computing allocation of half. Pro subscribers now have ten times the allocation of the Plus plan at $20 per month, down from twenty times previously.
Dots reserved for premium subscriptions, no date for expansion
Dots agents are initially offered through OpenAI's premium plans. The company specifies that, for now, their distribution will go through this range of subscriptions. No timeline or pricing is provided for broader availability beyond these plans.
Stated goal: 1.2 billion users for Dots
Sarah Friar indicates that OpenAI aims to make its premium agents accessible to its base of 1.2 billion consumer users. For businesses, Dots will first appear in Pro offerings and then in enterprise offerings. Friar presents Dots as a step towards AI that actively helps manage daily life, capable of reminding users of tasks like preparing a LinkedIn post and accessing email, calendar, Slack, or other work tools. Sam Altman clarifies that Dots starts as a premium product and aims to help the public understand the cost of what AI can achieve, while targeting a product intended for billions of people. OpenAI asserts that these agents will not remain indefinitely reserved for premium offerings.
Management observes a strong willingness to pay
Sarah Friar believes that the price point will not deter subscribers. She recalls that at the launch of the $200 SKU one to two years ago, many thought no customer would pay that monthly amount. According to her, OpenAI now sees that users are willing to spend more and are leaning more towards consumption.
