OpenAI Launches Space and Pages, Slides to Follow

OpenAI now offers Space and Pages to professional ChatGPT clients, with distinct access and governance rules depending on the plans. The company also announces a collaborative presentation module and a spreadsheet generator coming soon. This suite brings ChatGPT closer to an office suite, a path already taken by Anthropic.

Access Restricted to Paid Plans and Active Business Rules

Space and Pages are available on the Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Users on the free, Go, and Plus plans cannot access them. Team features and task sharing are reserved for Business and Enterprise plans, where sharing rules are determined by administrators and, by default, OpenAI does not use data to train its models. Pages can be created, modified, and shared via the web interface or the desktop application. On the mobile app, users can find, view, and share these Pages, but editing and collaboration will be added later. The Meetings plugin is offered in beta for Pro and Business plans, exclusively on the macOS desktop application, with upcoming availability for the Enterprise plan. Collaborative slide and spreadsheet creation features are expected soon, with no timeline provided.

Space Structures Collaborative Work and Automates Tasks

Space replaces the Library and consolidates all pages, files, presentations, and spreadsheets, whether created or imported. A team has the option to create a dedicated space, invite members, and detail its projects and priorities. When prompted, ChatGPT, Codex, and the dots utilize this shared context, with OpenAI emphasizing continuity with previous goals and work. Creation can start from a conversation or a template, following a brief exchange to clarify the request, and a Space also gathers the deliverables generated by the assistant. Collaborators can be grouped into teams, with sharing at the group level in one choice. Recurring tasks can be assigned to the AI, executed periodically or triggered by events like an email or a Slack message, with instructions collectively adjusted. A Meetings plugin records audio and organizes notes in Space, either privately or shared; ChatGPT can extract decisions and next steps, then log decisions, blockers, and changes in the project plan.

OpenAI Allows Agents to Generate and Update Pages

Pages introduces a document format designed for agents, suitable for plans, reports, prototypes, or interactive dashboards. OpenAI claims that everything achievable with ChatGPT can also be done in a Page. These documents are editable by multiple users in real-time, with each participant benefiting from their own ChatGPT, and comments can address a revision or a step to the AI or a dot. Pages can update from connected tools following instructions specifying content, sources, and frequency, with OpenAI citing a to-do list fed by Slack, emails, and calendars. Sharing a Page does not grant access to private conversations or the author's memory, but text written by ChatGPT based on that memory becomes visible to others. OpenAI recommends reviewing the content before sharing.

Collaborative Presentations Announced and Export to PowerPoint and Slides

OpenAI announces the upcoming arrival of a collaborative presentation editing tool. Slides can be generated from a conversation or a team template, incorporating editable native graphics, text, shapes, and images. The ability to co-edit, add comments, and signal to ChatGPT the parts to correct is planned. A presentation can be projected from ChatGPT or exported to PowerPoint or Google Slides with its formatting, according to OpenAI. A slide and spreadsheet generator-editor is also announced for the near future. The entire suite of collaborative slides and sheets is promised without a specific date.

Aiming for an Assisted Office Suite, Competing with Anthropic and Established Suites

These new features continue the trajectory of ChatGPT Work, an agent launched in July to compete with Claude Cowork, which already allows for the complete creation of documents, presentations, and spreadsheets. Space now provides an environment where these contents can be collaboratively reworked, both by humans and agents. Anthropic has taken a similar path in mid-September with Claude Docs and Claude Slides, capable of creating from conversation, co-editing, and exporting to PowerPoint or PDF. In both cases, writing, sharing, and reviewing can be done without leaving the assistant. OpenAI and Anthropic thus compete with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, supported by Copilot and Gemini, while retaining the ability to export to PowerPoint. This all falls within the many announcements made during DevDay, where OpenAI detailed a shared space, a new document format, and a presentation editor for teamwork.
