OpenAI announces two shopping tools for ChatGPT: a virtual try-on and a Favorites feature available globally. Based on Images 2.5, these new offerings target product inspiration and discovery, a space already occupied by Pinterest and Google, while public reception remains uncertain.
A Crowded Space and a Previous Shift in Strategy
The new features enter a segment where Pinterest and Google already serve as sources of inspiration and discovery that can translate into sales for online retailers. Google has been offering a virtual try-on since last year. It remains to be seen whether ChatGPT will become the users' first choice for these purposes. OpenAI has also previously abandoned an online shopping idea, an instant payment feature that did not meet expectations.
How Virtual Try-On Changes the User Experience
The virtual try-on allows users to upload a selfie or a full-body photo to visualize a piece of clothing or an accessory on themselves. A Try button should appear in the shopping results of ChatGPT to activate the option. Users can also send an image of an item, including a screenshot from a website, and ask ChatGPT to try it on for them.
Save Your Finds with Favorites
The new Favorites feature serves to save products spotted in a library within the app, allowing users to return to them later. The saved items are stored alongside the images generated during the virtual try-ons.
Images 2.5 Behind the Scenes and New Shopping Journeys
OpenAI relies on the recently launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. The company claims it produces more natural lighting and richer textures, better follows editing instructions, and reduces image generation latency. Users can describe a style and request the selection of corresponding pieces, or upload photos of celebrity outfits to identify items available for purchase. OpenAI indicates it has been experimenting with shopping uses in ChatGPT for some time and announced on Thursday a global launch of these two new features, in a context where AI assistants are entering these shopping journeys. Other players are also testing these approaches, such as Instinct, which offers product recommendations, although some users find these proactive suggestions intrusive.
