OpenAI Enhances Its Agent SDK for Businesses
In the dynamic world of technology, Agentic AI stands out as a major success, with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic striving to provide businesses with the tools needed to develop these automated assistants. In this context, OpenAI has recently updated its Software Development Kit (SDK) for agents, introducing several new features designed to help businesses create their own agents based on OpenAI's models.
Advanced Security Features
One of the main new features of the SDK is the integration of a sandboxing capability. This technology allows agents to operate in controlled computing environments, which is crucial as the unsupervised operation of agents can be risky due to their sometimes unpredictable behavior. With the sandbox, agents can operate in isolation within a specific workspace, accessing only the files and code necessary for specific operations, while protecting the overall integrity of the system.
A Distribution Harness for Advanced Models
Additionally, the new version of the SDK offers developers a distribution harness for advanced models. This harness enables agents to work with approved files and tools within a workspace. In the development of agents, the term "harness" refers to the other components of an agent in addition to the model it operates on. A distribution harness often allows businesses to deploy and test agents operating on cutting-edge models, considered the most advanced and versatile models available.
Karan Sharma, a member of OpenAI's product team, told TechCrunch: “This launch, at its core, aims to make our existing agent SDK compatible with all these sandbox providers.” The hope is that this, combined with the new harness capabilities, will allow users “to build these agents over the long term using our harness and with the infrastructure they have,” he added. These “long-term” tasks are generally considered to be more complex and requiring multiple steps.
Ongoing Development and Expanded Support
OpenAI has indicated that it will continue to develop the agent SDK over time. Initially, the new harness and sandbox capabilities are being launched in Python, with support for TypeScript planned for a later version. The company is also working on adding new capabilities for agents, such as code mode and sub-agents, for both Python and TypeScript.
Accessibility and Pricing
The new capabilities of the agent SDK are available to all customers via the OpenAI API and will use standard pricing. This update represents a significant advancement for businesses looking to harness the potential of automated agents while ensuring their security and efficiency.
