OpenAI Pauses ChatGPT's Adult Mode

Originally intended to enhance the user experience of ChatGPT, the adult mode has been paused by OpenAI. Less than a month after suspending this project, the company decided to set it aside for an indefinite period. This decision was reported by the Financial Times, highlighting that Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, wants to refocus the company's efforts on its core products. Among these products are ChatGPT, the coding tool Codex, and the AI agent browser Atlas, as well as other projects in development.

At the same time, OpenAI also announced the discontinuation of Sora, a video generation application. The adult mode of ChatGPT was designed to allow text-based discussions on adult topics, without generating erotic audio, visual, or video content. This project faced criticism both internally and externally due to concerns about minors accessing it and the potential for inappropriate content.

Pressures and Concerns Surrounding Adult Mode

The development of ChatGPT's adult mode faced numerous pressures. Internal advisors expressed concerns about the possibility of children accessing the chatbot, making it difficult to prevent the inclusion of abusive content in the model. OpenAI's investors also raised reservations, believing that the risks associated with the adult mode could outweigh its potential benefits.

In addition to social challenges, OpenAI encountered technical obstacles during the model's training, according to information from the Financial Times.

OpenAI Facing Increased Competition

OpenAI appears to be redirecting its strategy in response to growing pressure from competitors, notably Google and Anthropic, who are gaining ground in the market. Google recently launched Gemini 3, a new version that outperformed ChatGPT in performance tests. Anthropic, for its part, introduced Claude Opus 4.5 in November. In December, Sam Altman declared a "code red" to employees, urging them to improve ChatGPT.

The Ramp Index, which measures AI adoption by thousands of American businesses, revealed that Anthropic recorded a 5% increase in commercial AI adoption in February, while OpenAI experienced a 1.5% decline.

Financial Challenges and Growing Criticism

Although financial issues were not explicitly mentioned as a reason for pausing the adult mode, OpenAI is facing difficulties balancing its accounts and generating revenue from its technologies, according to the New York Times. The company's forecasts anticipate a loss of $14 billion by 2026, with projected expenses of $200 billion by the end of the decade.

The decision to set aside ChatGPT's adult mode comes amid growing criticism regarding sexualized content in AI chatbots. Grok, a chatbot developed by Elon Musk's xAI, has been criticized for allowing the creation of nude or suggestive images of individuals, including minors, from simple photos. The city of Baltimore has sued xAI for generating non-consensual sexual images, in violation of consumer protection laws.

Meta has also faced criticism for allowing its AI bots to engage in suggestive conversations with children, raising similar concerns about the safety of minor users.
