OpenAI has recently decided to indefinitely suspend the development of an "adult" mode for its famous chatbot ChatGPT. This decision, reported by The Financial Times, is part of a strategic refocusing of the company on its core products. Objections raised by employees and investors played a crucial role in this pause, due to concerns about the potentially harmful effects of AI-generated sexualized content on society.
This suspension comes shortly after the discontinuation of Sora, a text-to-video conversion platform also developed by OpenAI. The company justified this abandonment by citing internal discussions about its research priorities, seeking to concentrate on projects more aligned with its long-term goals. This series of decisions follows the alert issued by CEO Sam Altman last December, who declared a "code red," indicating that competitors such as Google and Anthropic are beginning to catch up to ChatGPT.
OpenAI has expressed its intention to spend more time studying the long-term effects of sexually explicit interactions and the emotional attachments generated by AI. According to The Financial Times, there is currently no empirical evidence to guide these decisions. Furthermore, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the adult mode project had been delayed due to internal concerns related to content moderation and child protection.
