The launch of OpenAI's AI agents "Dots" faces a landscape already occupied. Between a domain name that redirects to SpaceXAI's Grok Bot, existing trademarks in China, and a fashion retailer on dots.com, the product's reception is clouded by a series of homonyms and misunderstandings.

Dot.com redirects to Grok Bot and confusion escalates online

The dot.com address leads to a download page for Grok Bot, SpaceXAI's AI agent system. On Tuesday, this redirection led some X users to accuse Elon Musk's company of trolling. A widely shared post claimed: "OpenAI just announced Dots. SpaceXAI bought Dot.com," and it surpassed 3 million views by Tuesday evening. However, ownership records indicate that the update for the dot.com domain dates back to July 28, several months before OpenAI's announcement of Dots. SpaceXAI has not publicly commented on the reasons for this purchase, leaving room for online interpretations that see it as a jab at OpenAI. Other users believe that the timing coincidence goes beyond mere chance. SpaceXAI recently acquired the dot.com domain.

Existing Dots trademarks and reactions on dots.com

The name Dots is already in use by other companies. RedNote launched Dots Studio last year, an AI group specializing in visual language models. In April 2025, Shanghai Shengdongshizhang Technology filed a U.S. trademark for "DOTS" covering AI chatbot and personal assistant software. Additionally, a women's fashion company named Dots has an Instagram page that redirects to dots.com. After OpenAI's announcement, numerous comments appeared on this account, with some asking, "How much did OpenAI pay you?" and others stating, "My guy is going to cash a big check." Users also inquired, "Is this ChatGPT?" and one advised not to sell the domain for less than 1 million dollars.

OpenAI introduced Dots on Tuesday during its DevDay. This system consists of always-active AI assistants capable of continuing tasks even after the user has closed the discussion. During Sam Altman's demonstration, these agents took the form of colorful cartoon-style avatars. They are designed to help users accomplish their work. OpenAI chose to name this new system "Dots."
