A New Library for ChatGPT
OpenAI has recently introduced a library feature for ChatGPT users, allowing them to easily store, browse, and retrieve uploaded and created files with the AI tool. This new feature was announced by OpenAI this week, providing a centralized storage solution for users' documents.
All files uploaded in the chat window are automatically saved in this library, provided the user is logged into their account. The feature allows users to search for and find documents in one place, simplifying file management.
Access Restricted to Paying Subscribers
The library is exclusively accessible to users who have subscribed to the Plus, Pro, and Business plans, which require a subscription of at least $20 per month. It is also necessary to be online to access the stored files.
By enabling the memory feature of ChatGPT, the chatbot can reference saved files for discussion in future interactions. Supported file types include documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images, although images generated with ChatGPT are kept in a separate tab.
Usage and Restrictions of the Library
To use this feature, users must log into their account and click on the plus sign located to the left of the command window. They can then select "Add from Library" to choose the file to display.
The library is visible in a sidebar on the left, which is searchable and allows filtering results by file type and origin (uploaded or created). However, certain restrictions apply to file sizes:
- The maximum file size is 512 MB.
- Documents and chat conversations are limited to 2 million tokens.
- Spreadsheets and CSV files must be 50 MB or less.
- Images must be 20 MB or less.
Deleting files requires selecting the file in the library and clicking "delete" or using the trash icon. OpenAI commits to deleting the file within 30 days, except when necessary for security reasons or legal obligations.
Recent Developments at OpenAI
OpenAI continues to refine its models and expand its services, particularly for programmers and developers with faster models for code debugging. These improvements come as the company faces increased competition, notably from Anthropic with its Claude Code tool.
Additionally, OpenAI is considering developing a "superapp" for desktop that would consolidate all its AI tools, including ChatGPT, the coding platform Codex, and the internet browser Atlas. Meanwhile, OpenAI has announced the closure of its AI video application Sora to focus more on coding and productivity tools.
