Aggregated credit card data from YipitData indicates that OpenAI captures more spending than Claude in 47 states, sometimes by a significant margin. However, the tool relies on paid purchases and state-level readings, two choices that exclude free usage and population effects. In this context, California stands out as an exception where Anthropic leads.

A Partial Signal That Ignores Free Usage and Population Effect

Measuring by spending does not account for free users of ChatGPT and Claude. Comparing states can be misleading due to population disparities, and California, the most populous state, has favored Anthropic in terms of spending. Additionally, the data does not consider other consumer AI companies.

Anthropic Only Outpaces OpenAI in Three States and Washington, DC

According to YipitData, OpenAI has surpassed Anthropic in spending across 47 states. The only exceptions are Massachusetts, Montana, and California, where Anthropic has gained the upper hand. Anthropic has also outperformed OpenAI in Washington, DC.

Eight States Where OpenAI Captures at Least 70% of Spending

OpenAI has captured at least 70% of spending in eight states. Delaware shows 82% in favor of OpenAI. Alaska reaches 74%, Kentucky 71%, Louisiana 71%, Mississippi 77%, North Dakota 71%, New Mexico 70%, and West Virginia 72%.

Where the Numbers Come From and What Context Produces

Between June and August, YipitData analyzed AI-related spending by leveraging credit and debit card transactions. Andreessen Horowitz presented this information for the first time in its study focused on generative AI applications. The figures show a significant lead for OpenAI over Anthropic, two competing companies. Furthermore, Meta has recently found success with its AI agent Muse among customers, and many users are interacting with Gemini thanks to its integration into Google products. Two studies from 2025 indicate that ChatGPT is better suited for augmentation, while Claude is more geared towards automation. Among the two, only ChatGPT offers image generation.
