OpenAI Shaken by Departure of Three Key Executives

OpenAI is undergoing a transitional period marked by the departure of three of its senior executives. This shift comes as the company, under the leadership of Fidji Simo, CEO of applications, seeks to refocus its efforts by scaling back its side projects.

Kevin Weil, who previously served as the product director, announced his departure on LinkedIn. He revealed that his team, OpenAI for Science, is being decentralized, with its members redistributed to other research teams.

Bill Peebles, who was leading the AI video application Sora, has also left the company. Sora was shut down last month due to financial and computational constraints, although Peebles did not specify the reasons for his departure in his message.

A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that the company is looking to unify its business and product strategy. In this context, Prism, an AI workspace for scientists overseen by Weil, is being transferred to Codex, OpenAI's AI developer assistant, which is now expanding its capabilities beyond just coding.

Srinivas Narayanan, the chief technology officer for OpenAI's B2B applications, also announced his departure to spend more time with his family. According to a source close to the matter, his departure is not related to those of Weil and Peebles.

This strategic reshuffle is part of an effort to concentrate OpenAI's efforts on enterprise sales, a move led by Simo to prepare the company for an initial public offering. Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing increased competition from Anthropic, whose recent products like Claude Code are gaining popularity. Anthropic has recently received funding offers valuing the company at up to $800 billion, an impressive figure compared to its previous valuation in February. OpenAI, on the other hand, was valued at $852 billion during a funding round announced last month.

It is worth noting that Fidji Simo is currently on medical leave for several weeks, adding an additional layer of complexity to OpenAI's current challenges.
