OpenAI is undergoing a period of internal upheaval with the simultaneous departure of three of its top executives. Kevin Weil, who served as Chief Product Officer, announced his departure on X. Weil, who had recently focused his efforts on developing artificial intelligence tools for scientists, sees his division, OpenAI for Science, being redistributed among various research teams. The scientific tool Prism and its team will be integrated into the coding product Codex, as part of a strategy to merge several applications, including Prism and the Atlas browser, into a single super application.
Bill Peebles, head of research for the video model Sora, is also leaving OpenAI. This departure comes a month after the closure of the Sora application, a decision made due to a lack of computing capacity. OpenAI appears to be redirecting its efforts toward coding and enterprise clients, seeking to strengthen its position against competitors like Anthropic.
The third departure, that of Srinivas Narayanan, CTO of B2B Applications and head of the API engineering team, seems to be motivated by personal reasons. Narayanan expressed on X his desire to spend time with his parents before deciding on his next professional step. These movements within the company signal a period of strategic transition for OpenAI, which is redefining its priorities and organizational structure.
