OpenAI Introduces Autonomous Workspace Agents
OpenAI recently announced access to new workspace agents for users of its Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans. These agents, integrated into ChatGPT, are designed to automate various professional tasks. For example, one agent can search for product reviews online and send a report via Slack, while another can draft follow-up emails in Gmail.
A Response to Growing Interest in AI Agents
This initiative from OpenAI comes at a time when interest in AI agents continues to grow. A notable example is OpenClaw, an AI agent that has gained popularity, and whose founder, Peter Steinberger, now works for OpenAI. Competition is also intensifying with players like Anthropic, which offers its Claude Cowork agent capable of handling tasks from local files and provides a platform for creating autonomous agents.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
OpenAI's workspace agents are designed to be shared within organizations, allowing teams to collaborate more effectively. Once an agent is created, it can be used collectively in ChatGPT or Slack and improved over time. OpenAI specifies that these agents are capable of gathering the appropriate context, following team processes, requesting approvals if necessary, and maintaining workflow across various tools.
Towards the End of OpenAI's GPTs?
The introduction of these agents could signal the end of OpenAI's "GPTs," the customized chatbots launched in 2023. OpenAI describes the workspace agents as an "evolution" of the GPTs, stating that the latter will remain available during the testing phase of the new agents. OpenAI also plans to facilitate the conversion of GPTs into workspace agents. When contacted for a comment, spokesperson Taya Christianson simply referred to the blog post published by the company.
