Speculation around OpenAI's hardware ambitions is growing. According to a note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate predictions about Apple products, OpenAI may be venturing into smartphone development in partnership with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare.
A smartphone without traditional applications
The central idea of this project would be to replace classic applications with artificial intelligence agents capable of managing various tasks. Currently, Apple and Google dominate the app market, limiting certain functionalities through their control over the operating system. By developing its own device, OpenAI could bypass these restrictions and integrate AI more deeply.
Collaboration with tech giants
The project would include the creation of a smartphone chip in collaboration with MediaTek and Qualcomm, while Luxshare would be involved in the co-design and manufacturing of the phone. This approach would allow OpenAI to fully leverage AI capabilities, combining on-device models with cloud models to meet user needs.
Launch prospects and implications
The smartphone specifications and supplier choices are expected to be finalized by the end of 2027, with mass production anticipated for 2028. This timeline aligns with statements from Chris Lehane, OpenAI's head of global affairs, who announced a first hardware product for the second half of 2026, potentially headphones.
A future without applications?
This vision of a future without applications is not exclusive to OpenAI. Carl Pei, CEO of the coding app Vibe, also expressed at SXSW that applications could eventually disappear. OpenAI's smartphone could thus mark a turning point in how we interact with our devices on a daily basis.
For now, OpenAI has not commented on these rumors, but the idea of an AI-centered smartphone could very well transform the current technological landscape.
