OpenAI Prepares to Revolutionize the Smartphone Market with AI
OpenAI, known for its advancements in artificial intelligence, is planning a significant entry into the smartphone market. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned analyst, the company could produce up to 30 million AI-focused phones in the coming years. Kuo shared this information on X, indicating that the development of this device, which he describes as an "AI agent phone," is accelerating rapidly. Mass production could begin as early as the first half of next year, with an ambitious target of 30 million units by 2027-2028.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst based in Hong Kong for TF International Securities, is known for his accurate forecasts, particularly in the realm of Apple products. To date, OpenAI has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding these new prospects.
A New Strategy for OpenAI
A report from CNET published last month reveals that OpenAI has shifted its strategy. The company, once hesitant to engage in side projects, now appears determined to venture into phone manufacturing. The goal is to create a device that primarily operates with AI agents, thereby replacing traditional applications. This would enable users to perform tasks, access information, and entertain themselves more easily.
Although consumer enthusiasm for AI features is still limited, OpenAI and its partners firmly believe that AI will eventually replace conventional applications. Kuo also mentioned that MediaTek, a Taiwanese chipmaker, is likely to be the exclusive supplier of processors for this new phone.
Strategic Partnerships and Challenges Ahead
In addition to MediaTek, OpenAI is partnering with Qualcomm and Luxshare. Qualcomm is a major player in the semiconductor field, while Luxshare specializes in the production of chargers, cables, antennas, and connectors. These collaborations could be crucial for the project's success.
Despite some consumer reluctance towards AI phones, several popular models already incorporate this technology. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, Google Pixel 10 Pro, Apple iPhone 17 Pro, Honor Magic 7 Pro, and Xiaomi 15 Ultra demonstrate that AI is already well-established in the market. According to Grand View Research, the global AI smartphone market could grow from 52.1 million units in 2023 to nearly 1.9 billion by 2030.
Promising Technical Features
OpenAI's phone is expected to stand out with its advanced image signal processor, which will allow the AI to leverage images captured by the camera sensor. This sensor will offer an enhanced dynamic range, ensuring high-quality images and enriched visual details for the AI.
The device will also feature a "dual-NPU architecture for heterogeneous AI computing," utilizing two AI processors to handle different tasks. For instance, one could focus on image enhancement, while the other processes object detection or language.
The phone will be powered by a customized version of MediaTek's Dimensity 9600, a chipset designed for high-end AI processing and intensive gaming. Other AI chipsets, such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro, are also mentioned as references in this area.
Additionally, the software of OpenAI's phone will place a particular emphasis on memory and security, ensuring an optimized and secure user experience.
