OpenAI is preparing a screenless ChatGPT speaker for 2023

According to a report from Bloomberg, OpenAI's first device will be a smart speaker that allows users to converse with ChatGPT. The device will apparently lack a screen but will utilize a camera and additional sensors to "understand" your environment.

This report comes just days after Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of stealing trade secrets. OpenAI stated in a new release on Tuesday that it was "unaware of any evidence that this lawsuit has merit."

Sources report that OpenAI's device will also feature a rechargeable battery, enabling users to take it with them. It will offer smart home controls, as well as the ability to play media, answer questions, and respond to messages. Bloomberg adds that the device will use GPT-Live, OpenAI's enhanced voice model announced last week.

Bloomberg notes that the device will incorporate "mechanical elements capable of moving on their own" to "connect with users on a human level." In February, The Information reported on a similar device equipped with a camera capable of recognizing nearby objects or people.

The speaker, which is set to launch in 2027, is part of OpenAI's plans for a broader range of hardware, which currently includes "about" five devices, according to Bloomberg. OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on these new devices, following the acquisition of his design firm, io Products, for nearly $6.5 billion.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company has also teased a Codex gadget called Codex Micro, created in partnership with Work Louder, which is set to be released on July 15.
