OpenAI is preparing a range of AI devices, but keeps the mystery
In an interview with Joanna Stern on her YouTube channel, OpenAI President Greg Brockman announced that the company is working on a “family of devices” to interact with its AI models. However, Brockman did not confirm rumors that one of these devices would be a smart speaker that OpenAI plans to launch in 2027, nor previous speculation about a wearable device like the Humane AI pin. He also did not provide a release date, simply stating that “you can expect to see them soon.”
In response to a question about the potential impact of Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI on the devices being developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, Brockman said: “We are focusing on our own development and technology.” He added: “We have no interest in the trade secrets of other companies. We are innovative enough. We are thinking about things from our own perspective.”
Regardless of the format of OpenAI's new devices, Brockman believes we will shift to verbal communication with our computers rather than typing for the “vast majority of what we do.” Regarding the issue of everyone talking to their computer in an open office, he mentioned sound masks shaped like beaks that are starting to appear, saying that while he does not use them, “it really shows where the product-market fit is,” even though everyone agrees it won’t be a good solution.
Brockman also mentioned that OpenAI is working to address trust issues related to its AI models, such as concerns regarding ChatGPT's “temporary chat mode” and its true privacy. This includes developing technological solutions to provide “verifiable and auditable guarantees” that only AI models can examine users' private data.
