OpenAI: ChatGPT Ads in India and Ad Manager

OpenAI will display ads on ChatGPT Free and Go in India and plans to launch an ad manager with a minimum daily budget of ₹725. This expansion, already in place in the United States and Europe, comes amid ambitious financial goals and a large base of Indian users.
High Financial Goals and Potential IPO
According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI generated $6.7 billion in revenue in the second quarter ending June 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter. The company is looking to strengthen and consolidate its revenue sources ahead of a potential IPO planned for this year or next. Last November, it was reported that OpenAI aims for 220 million paying subscribers by 2030. At that time, it was noted that 35 million users had already paid for Plus and Pro plans.
Ad Formats and Tools: 50 Brands and an Ad Manager
OpenAI has indicated that it will begin displaying ads for 50 brands and has partnered with agencies WPP and Omnicom. An ad management tool is set to launch next month; it will allow marketing professionals to design campaigns for their companies, subject to a minimum daily budget set at ₹725, or about $7.60. Dave Dugan, head of global advertising solutions at OpenAI, stated, “With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of all sizes can present themselves at relevant and contextual moments when decisions begin to form.” OpenAI started displaying ads to U.S. users in February and expanded the program in Europe earlier this month.

Focus on India: Ads, User Base, and Local Actions
OpenAI announced that it will begin inserting ads on ChatGPT Free and Go in India, after updating its terms of service earlier this month to include ad displays while using the assistant. In February, the company announced it surpassed 100 million weekly active users of ChatGPT in India, with a majority using free or low-cost offerings. To broaden this audience, OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT Go subscription for under $5 in August 2025 and offered a temporary promotional deal making this plan free for twelve months. The company has also heavily promoted its services during the Women’s Premier League and the Indian Premier League and recently appointed a former Uber executive in India to lead its development strategy in the country.
