OpenAI is reintroducing its Pro subscription at $200 while significantly altering the balance between subscription and API. The company is reducing the included API credits, eliminating a time limit, and highlighting less expensive GPT-6 models, with a future pricing structure more closely tied to usage.
Towards a Usage-Based Pricing Model, Already Practiced by Microsoft
Microsoft already offers usage-based billing for Copilot in certain sectors. OpenAI is also moving towards a usage-based pricing model, distancing itself from heavily subsidized subscriptions. Thibault Sottiaux, an employee at OpenAI, indicates that API prices are expected to gradually decrease, in order to narrow the gap between what a subscription allows and what one can obtain via the API for the same amount. This model would enable AI labs to align their revenues with the actual value extracted by businesses.
Pro at $200, Reduced API Credits, and End of the 5-Hour Limit
OpenAI is reopening registrations for its Pro offer at a rate of $200 per month for new subscribers. The API credits granted per dollar are now halved. The 5-hour usage limit has been permanently removed, allowing subscribers to allocate their weekly allowance as they wish. This week, OpenAI also launched the GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna models at a price reduced by half compared to previous versions. According to Thibault Sottiaux, despite the decrease in API credits, subscribers should be able to accomplish more than they did the previous month.
