With the launch of GPT-5.4, OpenAI has decided to integrate its separate coding model, Codex, directly into its main model. This integration marks the end of a dedicated coding line, as explained by Romain Huet, head of developer experience at OpenAI. Thus, GPT-5.3, launched in early February, has become the last standalone Codex model.
Romain Huet emphasized that GPT-5.5 brings notable improvements in the field of agentic coding, where artificial intelligence is capable of autonomously managing programming tasks. Furthermore, GPT-5.5 offers better utilization of computing resources and enhanced performance on general tasks.
In terms of efficiency, GPT-5.5 uses fewer tokens than its predecessor, GPT-5.4, to accomplish the same Codex tasks. This results in better outcomes while reducing resource usage. However, despite this optimization, API prices are increasing by about 20%.
For those following OpenAI's journey, this evolution is not unexpected. The company initially launched a Codex code model, which it discontinued in 2023 to focus on general-purpose language models. Codex made its return in May 2025 under the name Codex-1, based on o3, and remains a central element of OpenAI's development alongside ChatGPT.
