OpenAI Wants a Place for ChatGPT on Android
OpenAI is ramping up its efforts to have the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recognize ChatGPT as a viable alternative to Google Search. The company aims for ChatGPT to be included in "choice screens" on Android phones and the Chrome browser, a proposal that could reshape the search engine landscape.
The CMA had previously identified Google as having a "strategic market status" in the online search domain. In response, it proposed providing users with regular alternative options. OpenAI argues that AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, should be considered full-fledged search engines, emphasizing that more and more users are turning to these technologies for their daily queries.
ChatGPT and Competition with Google
Since 2024, ChatGPT has offered web search capabilities, attracting around 900 million users each week. This growing popularity strengthens OpenAI's case for ChatGPT to be recognized as a serious competitor to Google.
Google, for its part, has expressed reservations about the introduction of these alternative "pop-ups," labeling them as disruptive to the user experience. Despite the rise of AIs like ChatGPT, Google continues to dominate the market, with a 16% increase in its search revenue last year, reaching $63 billion.
The Rise of AI at Google
In response to the competition, Google is developing its own AI system, Gemini, which is experiencing rapid growth. Gemini is designed to directly compete with ChatGPT, illustrating the frantic race among tech giants to dominate the artificial intelligence sector.
