OpenAI is in talks to lease a massive 10-gigawatt data center in Ohio, a project that could be financed by Nvidia, according to information revealed by The Information. This site, currently under construction on federal land in southern Ohio, is being developed by SB Energy, an entity predominantly owned by SoftBank, an investor in OpenAI.
The total cost of the project could reach $500 billion when the center operates at full capacity. OpenAI is considering committing to a 20-year lease, marking its largest infrastructure investment to date. Nvidia would act as a guarantor for the lease and financing, using its balance sheet to support the payments. This type of financial backing would represent a first of its kind at this scale for Nvidia.
This project echoes the Stargate initiative, announced at the White House in January 2025 with Oracle and SoftBank, which did not come to fruition. The first phase of the center, with a capacity of 800 megawatts, is scheduled for 2028.
The site chosen for this data center was once a uranium enrichment facility in Pike County. Discussions are still ongoing, and plans may evolve. Additionally, OpenAI has recently filed confidential documents for an initial public offering.
