OpenAI Pauses Stargate UK

OpenAI has recently decided to suspend its Stargate UK project, an AI infrastructure initiative that was set to launch in the United Kingdom. This decision represents a significant setback for the British government and for Nscale, a data center company that was collaborating with OpenAI and Nvidia on this ambitious project. The California-based company justified this pause due to concerns related to energy costs and existing regulations.

An Ambitious Project on Hold

Announced in September, Stargate UK was part of a broader plan by OpenAI to expand its network of data centers to support the deployment and training of its artificial intelligence models. Similar projects are underway in the United States, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates.

Nscale, a London-based company, had raised a record $2 billion in its Series C funding round last month. It is part of a new wave of companies referred to as "neo-clouds," which are responding to the growing demand for computing power generated by the AI boom. In September 2025, during the announcement of its partnership with OpenAI and Nvidia, Nscale expressed its intention to acquire up to 8,000 Nvidia GPUs in the first quarter of 2026, with the possibility of expanding to 31,000 units.

Reactions and Outlook

The Stargate UK project was launched by the British government during Donald Trump's state visit. Among the commitments made, AI Pathfinder, a company whose assets were frozen by the high court earlier this year, had promised an investment of $18 billion.

Despite the suspension of the project, a spokesperson for the British government stated that the country continues to collaborate with OpenAI and other industry leaders to enhance its computing capacity. The goal remains to create a favorable environment for investment in AI infrastructure and data centers in the UK.
