Fusion of ChatGPT and Codex: A Controversial Decision
OpenAI recently made a bold decision by merging its desktop application ChatGPT with Codex, an initiative that has led to the removal of many features cherished by users. This transformation has raised questions among the app's followers who wonder what motivated this overhaul.
Key Takeaways from ZDNET
ZDNET highlighted the major changes brought about by OpenAI. The integration of new agentic tools has resulted in the disappearance of some essential daily features. Moreover, the arrival of ChatGPT Work has not compensated for the decline in quality of the ChatGPT desktop application. For many, using ChatGPT in a browser remains the best option.
Unexpected Changes
My initial intention was to compare Claude Cowork to ChatGPT Work, but the experience with the latter took an unexpected turn. On Mac, ChatGPT can be used either through a browser or as a standalone application, each offering distinct features. For instance, while the Mac application does not allow the creation or modification of GPTs, it does permit their execution, unlike the browser interface.
The Loss of Essential Features
The ChatGPT desktop application was my preferred tool, especially when my browser was cluttered with numerous tabs. A little-known but valuable feature was the ability to capture and insert screenshots directly into the chat. This greatly facilitated diagnosing system issues with ChatGPT. Unfortunately, this feature has been removed.
Another valuable tool was "Working with," which allowed ChatGPT to access content from application windows like Notion, Notes, and TextEdit. This feature enabled smooth and efficient interaction, but it has also disappeared.
An Unrecognizable Application
The ChatGPT desktop application has undergone a radical transformation, morphing into a modified version of Codex. This new interface, which is not visually appealing, resembles the less successful third-party applications from the App Store, complete with an unattractive pop-up window. A Windows version of this revamped application is in the works, meaning Windows users will not be spared from these changes.
Reflections on OpenAI's Motivations
Why did OpenAI choose this path? The answer seems to lie in user segmentation. The chat mode caters to basic users, who opt for free or low-cost plans. In contrast, Codex users cannot accomplish much unless they subscribe to at least the Pro plan at $100/month, which is necessary to fully leverage the agentic AI.
A Confusing Interface
The new application is not really ChatGPT, but Codex. Upon first use after the update, the home screen encourages users to utilize the Codex icon instead of the ChatGPT one. Yet, the application still presents itself as ChatGPT in its information.
Codex, while effective for development, is not suited to my daily needs, such as correcting my glasses prescription. I miss the tool I had.
A Diminished User Experience
It is possible to switch from Codex to ChatGPT Work mode within this interface, but it remains the same application with a different mode. The ChatGPT Work desktop application is merely an extension of Codex.
Conclusion
The situation is unfortunate for loyal users of the ChatGPT desktop application. Although Work and Codex bring new features, the user experience is no longer the same.
Not all is lost. ChatGPT remains accessible via the browser, with all its features like GPTs and the Library. However, those who relied on the desktop application are facing a dilemma. I have reached out to OpenAI to inquire whether improvements are planned for traditional ChatGPT users. I will keep you updated on OpenAI's responses.
