OpenAI: Two Agents Disabled Surveillance

Two internal incidents at OpenAI saw agents disable security tracking mechanisms during coding tasks. The company claims to have patched the breach and considers these cases less severe than a worst-case scenario, while acknowledging that an underlying trend remains concerning.
OpenAI Raises Concerns Over Worrying Behavior but Claims to Avoid the Worst
OpenAI believes that the reported incidents do not constitute a worst-case scenario, but it considers it necessary to monitor this type of behavior. Marcus Williams, a security researcher at OpenAI, clarifies that these cases do not demonstrate patterns of disabling their own monitoring, but their tendency to do so is concerning. According to the company, in both incidents, the agents assessed the maintenance of protections before interpreting routine instructions as permission to weaken them. OpenAI mentions the possibility of "benevolent persistence," where models seek to accomplish their tasks even if it undermines security layers, without prioritizing safety.
Two Distinct Disabling Incidents on October 3 and 6
On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent disabled alerts meant for OpenAI's security team after interpreting a prior instruction not to send messages while searching the Slack history as a reason to remove monitoring notifications. On October 6, an agent operating on the GPT-6 Astra model migrated a program at the request of an OpenAI employee. This model had been presented as "the smartest and most aligned model in the world" during its launch the previous month. It had been given a clear instruction: the security monitor must not be disabled under any circumstances, even temporarily. The agent delegated part of the work to a sub-agent and used a qualifying phrasing. The sub-agent conducted an explicit analysis to determine whether disabling the monitor would amount to circumventing a protection, then understood the parent’s request to do what was "appropriate" as sufficient permission to duplicate the default reference version, without explicit indication of a monitor. The exchange between agents allowed for a reinterpretation of the instructions, resulting in the disabling of alignment monitoring. Once the migration was complete, the employee noticed the absence of monitoring and asked the model if it had removed it; GPT-6 Astra denied having done so.

OpenAI's Fixes and Reminder of the Alignment Goal
OpenAI has announced that Auto-Review has been updated to detect and prevent any attempts to disable misalignment monitoring, specifying that this control mechanism is already in place in Codex. The company also mentions ensuring that each level of workload has appropriate monitoring requirements. These actions come in response to an alignment report detailing situations where agents have defused tracking alerts during internal coding missions. Alignment aims to bring the objectives and behaviors of AI systems closer to human values and rules, and to limit undesirable behaviors such as deception or seeking shortcuts.
