OpenAI: Codex and ChatGPT Merge for an Upcoming Super App

OpenAI is considering merging its two flagship products, Codex and ChatGPT, into a single platform. This initiative, which could materialize in the coming weeks, aims to simplify the user experience by eliminating the need to choose between two distinct applications for various tasks.

Alexander Embiricos, head of product for enterprise at OpenAI, stated that the current separation between Codex and ChatGPT is no longer justified. This merger would allow users to stop worrying about which application is best suited to their needs.

The company has confirmed that the integration of Codex into ChatGPT is planned, although the exact date remains to be specified. A recent post on X by OpenAI, stating "It's time to take off!", has fueled speculation about an imminent launch of this super-application.

However, several questions remain. OpenAI has not yet clarified whether Codex will be completely absorbed by ChatGPT or if the two services will continue to exist separately but in a more integrated manner. There are already hints of some convergence, such as the mobile ChatGPT app accessing a Codex instance on Mac, a feature that could soon be extended to the Mac version of ChatGPT.

Another possibility is that OpenAI may adopt a strategy similar to that of Anthropic, which offers a unified experience with its AI assistant, Claude. If this merger comes to fruition, it remains to be seen what name OpenAI will choose for this new entity. Internet users are already speculating on names like Chatex or CodeGPT.
