To illustrate its performance, OpenAI shared examples of fictitious screenshots, demonstrating how this model can blur the lines between the real and the virtual.

On Tuesday, OpenAI officially announced ChatGPT Images 2.0, highlighting its "reflective capabilities." Among these is the ability to browse the Internet and "verify" its own results, marking a significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence. The examples provided include images that appear to be screenshots of a user flipping through a magazine, emphasizing the model's ability to create images that mimic reality.

A Bold Demonstration on Social Media

To promote the launch of ChatGPT Images 2.0, OpenAI shared an AI-generated image on X, mimicking a screenshot of a Google Chrome tab on a Mac. This image shows an open tab on the ChatGPT site, discussing the livestream of the new model. This demonstration aims to prove the model's effectiveness in creating images that can easily be confused with real photographs.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, expressed his satisfaction during the livestream, stating: "The team really did a great job on this one." This statement underscores OpenAI's confidence in the capabilities of its new model.

ChatGPT Images 2.0 is not limited to the English language. OpenAI clarified that the model can generate images from prompts written in multiple languages, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi, and Bengali. An OpenAI spokesperson emphasized that the company does not intend to copy or reproduce specific works. The images are generated from models it has learned from, allowing for creative variations on celebrities and real images. For instance, the model generated a glam 1980s version of legendary investor Warren Buffett and a layout of a dinner from a Business Insider editor.

OpenAI prevents the reproduction of individual living artists' styles but allows for the recreation of broader studio styles. Mitch Stoltz, director of intellectual property litigation for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, stated that the latest model does not raise copyright issues as long as the generated images are not substantially similar to existing works.

"If the result is substantially similar to something the model was trained on or has browsed, then there starts to be a copyright concern," Stoltz explained. "But if it's similar at the level of an idea, or just something that happens in the world, or even a style or ambiance — generally, that's not enough, and it's not a copy under copyright law."

OpenAI Facing Legal Challenges

Despite the precautions taken, OpenAI is facing at least a dozen ongoing lawsuits for copyright infringement from writers and media, including The New York Times and George R.R. Martin. "The copyright issues are the same as if you were just using Photoshop, a darkroom, or a human artist to make these types of replicas," Stoltz added. "The stakes for society, whether you call them ethical or political, are higher because it's easier, faster, and more accessible."
