Justin McLeod and His New Bet: Overtone
Justin McLeod, the creator of the popular dating app Hinge, recently announced a significant fundraising round of $18 million for his new project, Overtone. This dating service, still in development, promises to revolutionize the industry by adopting an audio and voice-centered approach, made possible through artificial intelligence.
After stepping down as CEO of Hinge last year, McLeod has surrounded himself with heavyweight partners to finance this new venture. Among them are Match Group, the owner of Hinge, as well as popular apps like Tinder and OkCupid. Venture capital firms FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital are also participating in the funding.
An Innovative and Differentiated Approach
Although specific details about Overtone are still scarce, the company presents itself as a service that stands out from traditional dating apps. McLeod expressed his vision in a blog post, stating that Overtone will not be a mere social platform. Unlike apps that reduce users to static profiles, Overtone aims to offer carefully curated introductions, without the often-criticized algorithmic feeds.
McLeod openly criticizes traditional online dating methods, such as "swiping" and opaque algorithms, emphasizing that the industry needs to evolve. This stance comes as many users express their dissatisfaction with current apps.
The Need for a New Approach
A survey conducted by Forbes Health in 2024 highlighted the discomfort of users on these platforms. According to the study, 78% of participants feel exhausted by the use of dating apps. The 1,000 respondents reported spending about 51 minutes a day on these platforms, yet achieving unsatisfactory results in terms of human connections.
In light of this observation, many apps are trying to enhance the user experience by integrating AI for features like conversation starters or profile creation assistance. However, this increased automation is not universally welcomed, with many fearing a dehumanization of the process.
A Thoughtful Use of AI
In contrast to this trend, McLeod wants to use AI to refine the matching process, limiting the number of potential matches to those that truly have potential. He emphasizes a deep understanding of each user, valuing their personal story and unique voice.
McLeod explains that the introductions proposed by Overtone will be based on rigorous relationship science and thorough reflection. The goal is to create meaningful and justified connections, clearly explaining why two people might get along.
A Market in Transformation
Overtone is not the only app exploring this path. Services like Ditto and Date Drop are also adopting similar strategies, betting on AI to create authentic connections, rather than letting users get lost in an ocean of endless choices.
Set to launch later this year, Overtone will initially be available in select regions only. In addition to the fundraising announcement, the company also revealed that relationship expert Esther Perel will join its board of directors. She will be joined by Spencer Rascoff, CEO of Match, and Diana Chapman, a leadership advisor.
