OVHcloud Acquires Dragon LLM to Strengthen Its AI Strategy

OVHcloud Launches into Generative AI with Dragon LLM

On March 25, OVHcloud announced the acquisition of Dragon LLM, a French company specializing in artificial intelligence, previously known as Lingua Custodia. This move marks a first for OVHcloud in the field of AI, signaling a significant strategic shift.

Until now, OVHcloud had taken a cautious approach to generative AI, avoiding heavy investments in GPU farms. However, this acquisition reflects a desire to strengthen the company's sovereignty and technological autonomy.

According to the official statement, this acquisition will enable the creation of an AI lab within OVHcloud, dedicated to training and refining sovereign LLMs. The goal is to enhance the company's expertise in the field of generative AI.

Thanks to the technologies developed by Dragon LLM, OVHcloud plans to launch new generative AI services. These solutions aim to securely process sensitive data, which can be deployed both in the cloud and on corporate infrastructures.

For now, OVHcloud has not specified the fate of Dragon LLM's existing services. However, it seems unlikely that they will be halted immediately, as the company is likely waiting for the release of its financial results on April 9 to provide more details.

This acquisition follows the purchase of Seald in February, a French company specializing in end-to-end encryption.

Why Did OVHcloud Choose Dragon LLM?

Founded in 2011, Dragon LLM first gained recognition for its automated translation solutions for financial documents. Over time, the company has broadened its focus to concentrate more on generative AI.

Olivier Debeugny, co-founder and CEO of Dragon LLM, explained that this evolution has allowed the company to develop its own language models, particularly in specialized sectors like finance.

Today, Dragon LLM is recognized for its specific generative AI models. It notably won the Large AI Grand Challenge from the European Commission, a competition aimed at training a SLM (Small Language Model) with 3.6 billion parameters on the Leonardo and Jupiter supercomputers.

This success demonstrates Dragon LLM's ability to design effective models using European infrastructures. At the same time, the company has gained expertise in developing large-scale models. For instance, it has refined several open weight LLMs such as Llama 3.1 and Qwen 3, with up to 70 billion parameters, using financial data.

This level of expertise is rare in Europe, where only a few companies like Mistral AI, Aleph Alpha, or Silo AI possess similar capabilities.

Dragon LLM has also developed Verto, a platform that goes beyond simple financial translation. With an integrated RAG system, Verto allows for the verification of complex documents, such as prospectuses or contracts, and assists in tender processes.

Prestigious clients like BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, and Natixis are already using these services, hosted on dedicated servers at Scaleway.

What Does the Future Hold for Dragon LLM Clients?

For current clients of Dragon LLM, the acquisition by OVHcloud could lead to significant changes.

• First, the transition under the leadership of a major European cloud player could enhance the stability and longevity of the services offered.

• Clients can now rely on the financial and technical support of OVHcloud, thereby reducing the risks associated with the independence of a startup.

• Next, integration into the OVHcloud ecosystem could alter how services are deployed and maintained. For example, some solutions may gradually be migrated to OVHcloud's cloud, offering better integration with other cloud services. This could require adjustments from clients.

• Finally, this acquisition may influence the product roadmap and development priorities. OVHcloud might decide to focus innovation on certain models or features, which could accelerate some improvements but also delay other services deemed less strategic.

On a contractual and commercial level, changes in access conditions, billing, or support are possible, although OVHcloud has not yet provided specific details.

A study conducted by Enterprise Strategy Group and reported by Monetizely shows that 68% of companies have experienced significant changes in their roadmap after acquiring their SaaS provider. 42% of them found these changes "disruptive" to their operations.

Ultimately, this operation could pave the way for new offerings that combine AI and sovereign cloud. Existing clients may be prioritized. However, all of this remains hypothetical for now.
