Patreon Cuts 20% of Its Workforce in Response to AI Impact
Patreon has announced a 20% reduction in its workforce, amounting to approximately 93 employees, as reported by 404 Media. In a memo to employees, Patreon's CEO, Jack Conte, clarified that the company is not taking these measures “because we believe AI is replacing humans,” but emphasized that AI has “fundamentally transformed the tech industry, including how we work, build products, communicate, and more.”
This change has altered “our way of operating and organizing,” Conte wrote.
In an interview on Decoder last month, Conte shared his views on AI, stating that the company “fully embraces 100%” AI tools internally to continue serving creators:
- “If Patreon does not fully adopt these tools as a product and engineering company — and we are first and foremost a product and engineering company — and does not use them to empower creators, we, as a company, will be dead in three years.”
Patreon had previously laid off 17% of its employees in 2022 and had also closed its offices in Dublin and Berlin.
