Pentagon: ChatGPT and Grok on GenAI.mil, Claude Still Absent

The Department of Defense activates two new models on GenAI.mil: OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government. The platform, used by over 1.7 million people, operates in a closed environment with no data collection. Claude from Anthropic remains excluded after a refusal for unlimited use and a risk classification overturned by a court at the end of August.

Claude from Anthropic is not available on GenAI.mil. The company did not agree to allow the Pentagon to use its model without restrictions. Anthropic had been placed on the supply chain risk list by the Trump administration, a measure that the courts declared illegal at the end of August.

OpenAI and xAI: administration, procurement, and logistics on the agenda

The Pentagon has added OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government to GenAI.mil. ChatGPT Mil is primarily intended for administrative tasks, logistics, and planning. Grok is presented by the Pentagon as suitable for procurement analysis and supply chain management.

A closed platform, already widely adopted

So far, GenAI.mil had only offered Google Gemini since its launch in December. According to the Department of Defense, over 1.7 million users are utilizing the platform out of more than three million employees and military personnel. The new models are deployed in a distinct secure space, different from commercial versions to prevent any leakage of sensitive government data. User data is not recorded.
