Pentagon: ChatGPT Mil and Grok on Secure GenAI.mil

The Pentagon is generalizing the internal use of AI tools with government versions of ChatGPT and Grok accessible via GenAI.mil. The initiative targets three million agents, relies on privacy guarantees, and comes amid expanded partnerships and the absence of Claude from Anthropic.
Claude Absent and Parallel Partnerships Established
The Claude model from Anthropic is not part of the recent additions. Anthropic has been designated as a supply chain risk by the Trump administration and is currently contesting this classification in court. This situation arises from Anthropic's refusal to grant the Pentagon unlimited access to its AI tools, as the company insisted on implementing security measures. Meanwhile, the Department of Defense has signed agreements with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities.
Grok Announced for Immediate Gains and Operational Uses
The Pentagon describes Grok in broad terms focused on military needs. According to the Department of Defense, Starshield AI’s Grok for Government is expected to deliver immediate productivity gains, enhanced knowledge continuity, and more secure and efficient collaboration. The ministry specifies that Grok will enable military personnel to execute missions more quickly and accurately, in contexts ranging from market analysis for acquisitions to supply chain management for logisticians. Starshield AI, developed by SpaceX, relies on a secure satellite network using Starlink technology.

GenAI.mil Expands Secure Access, with ChatGPT Mil and Gemini
ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now accessible via GenAI.mil, a centralized and secure portal launched last year, which already offered Google Gemini at its opening. This portal allows Department of Defense employees to use advanced commercial AI models without exposing sensitive government data on public channels. The official military version does not collect data, unlike consumer products. According to the Department of Defense, the platform is experiencing strong demand, with over 1.7 million unique users among the three million personnel. This initiative is part of a broader effort to accelerate work and provide an advantage to the department without compromising security. ChatGPT Mil, stemming from the OpenAI for Government program, is announced with a user experience similar to that of ChatGPT for the general public, focused on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. It is designed to support administrative, logistical, planning, and unclassified policy tasks that involve large volumes of documents, with additional features to come.
