The artificial intelligence startup Perplexity recently made waves by distributing Mac Minis to tech enthusiasts to test its AI-powered personal computer software. This initiative has contributed to a significant increase in demand for Apple's Mac Mini, already fueled by the growing popularity of AI tools like OpenClaw.
Perplexity's personal computer, launched in April, is an extension of its AI browser agent, Perplexity Computer. This software works with local files, native applications, and the web, but only through Perplexity's Mac app.
Since May, several content creators have expressed their gratitude to Perplexity for sending these computers, sharing their excitement on social media. One user even captioned a photo of their device: "I have officially joined the Mac Mini club. Thanks to @perplexity_ai for the send."
Perplexity confirmed to Business Insider that it offered a limited number of Mac Minis to users interested in optimizing its software. Leveraging social media influence is not uncommon in consumer electronics. For example, Meta has sent its Ray-Ban smart glasses to content creators for them to showcase online.
In an April blog post, Perplexity touted the Mac Mini as "one of the best ways to experience Personal Computer," emphasizing that on a mini, the Personal Computer remains available 24/7 for work requiring a persistent machine or secure local access to your files and native applications.
The Mac Mini has become a status symbol among tech enthusiasts. The increasing demand for this device was highlighted by Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, during a financial earnings call in March. Apple has struggled to keep the Mac Mini on shelves in recent weeks due to this heightened demand.
Jesse Dwyer, Perplexity's communications director, told Business Insider that he constantly uses his Mac Mini, operating it from his other Apple devices, wherever he is.
In May, the price of the Mac Mini was adjusted to $799 for a model with 512 GB of storage, following the removal of the base model priced at $599 with 256 GB of storage. This increase reflects the enthusiasm for AI tools and the capabilities of the Mac Mini.
