An Unexpected Phenomenon in AI Assistants
The intelligent assistants we use daily sometimes exhibit surprising behaviors. Although two assistants may be based on the same model and trained identically, they can give the impression of having distinct personalities. For example, one may seem warm and a bit vague, while the other is precise and slightly cold. This difference is also evident in their interaction styles: one may ask before acting, while the other acts first and informs later.
The Unintentional Origin of Personalities
These personality differences are not the result of intentional design. They are not defined by benchmarks or specific criteria. They emerge as soon as the user begins to interact with the assistant. In reality, no one has specifically designed these distinctive traits. They spontaneously arise from the training process and rewards, without direct human intervention.
A Challenge for Product Designers
For designers, whose role is to shape product perception, this spontaneous emergence of personality poses a significant challenge. The personality of AI products manifests independently of design intent, raising questions about how these products are perceived by users. The real question is whether we should take control of designing these personalities or allow these traits to emerge naturally.
