AI Agents and the Challenge of Autonomous Transactions
Artificial intelligence raises a new issue in the digital economy: how to enable a software agent to autonomously purchase the services of another software agent? This question, which might have seemed trivial a few years ago, could become one of the major strategic challenges of the next decade. As autonomous agents enhance their capabilities, they no longer just seek information or analyze data; they begin to make decisions, select suppliers, consume services, and conduct transactions.
This evolution creates a need for a monetary infrastructure suited for machines. For several years, stablecoins have primarily been associated with cryptocurrency markets, but thanks to AI, they could soon find much broader applications. For a growing number of players in the tech ecosystem, they appear to be the most credible candidate to become the native currency of the agent economy.
Payment Remains the Missing Link in the Agent Economy
The current system reaches its limits when an AI agent needs to make a purchase. Although software can execute complex actions, human intervention often remains necessary for the payment of services, data, or computing resources. This raises a new question for the digital economy: how to enable software to purchase the services of another software?
The global payment infrastructure was designed for humans, where credit cards, transfers, or direct debits require an account holder, explicit validation, and a relatively limited transaction volume. However, the agent economy operates under a different logic. Tomorrow, an agent could purchase a few seconds of computing power from a GPU provider, temporarily access a specialized database, pay another agent for a specific task, or acquire a financial report for a few cents. These operations could be repeated several hundred or thousands of times a day.
In this context, the cost of the transaction can sometimes exceed the value of the service purchased. The problem is no longer technological but economic.
The Unexpected Return of Micropayments
Since the dawn of the Internet, micropayments have always been an unfulfilled promise. The idea was simple: allow a user to pay a few cents to access an article, a video, or specific data. Despite numerous experiments, the model has never found its market.
The fees associated with traditional payment networks made these transactions unprofitable. Moreover, users were not willing to manually validate dozens of daily purchases of a few cents. The arrival of agents changes this equation. Unlike humans, software does not suffer from decision fatigue. They can instantly arbitrate between multiple offers, optimize their spending in real-time, and perform a large number of microtransactions without friction. For the first time since the emergence of the web, micropayments have a natural user: artificial intelligence.
Stablecoins Precisely Meet This Need
Stablecoins are attracting the attention of the tech industry not only for their financial characteristics but also for their architecture. They allow for the transfer of very small amounts at low cost, globally and in a programmable manner. They operate continuously, independent of banking hours or national borders, and can be directly integrated into applications, automatically driven by software.
This convergence explains why several major tech players are beginning to view stablecoins as an essential component of AI infrastructure.
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Stripe Converge on the Same Issue
The companies involved do not share the same business models. OpenAI develops assistants capable of performing increasingly complex tasks. Anthropic builds an ecosystem of agents capable of interacting with external tools. Stripe and PayPal are interested in how these agents will be able to make payments.
However, they all converge on the same question: how to enable software to exchange value with another software? Payment ceases to be a separate step and becomes an integral component of the decision-making process. This evolution heralds the emergence of an economy where agents negotiate, purchase, and sell digital services autonomously.
A New Generation of Fintechs is Preparing
This transformation opens up a considerable market. While the fintechs of the last decade have built services aimed at individuals and businesses, a new category of players is emerging: financial infrastructures for agents. Companies like Skyfire are developing financial identities and payment systems specifically designed for autonomous software. Others are working on budget management, spending authorizations, or control mechanisms necessary for agents to use funds.
In Europe, companies like Fipto and AllUnity are already building payment infrastructures based on stablecoins, which could become essential building blocks of this future economy. Although the market is still in its infancy, its direction seems increasingly clear.
A Strategic Battle for Control of the AI Economy
Stablecoins could become for the agent economy what Visa and Mastercard were for e-commerce, or what AWS has become for the cloud. The challenge lies in controlling the transactional layer of an economy potentially composed of millions of software agents conducting billions of daily exchanges. This perspective explains the growing interest from Stripe, Coinbase, Circle, Visa, Mastercard, and many regulators.
Europe is also closely monitoring this evolution. After allowing the United States to dominate AI models, cloud computing, and computing infrastructures, it could hardly accept a new dependency on the monetary layer of the digital economy. One of the next major battles in AI may thus not only take place in data centers or research labs but in the payment systems that will enable machines to exchange value with one another.
