OpenAI Partners with Private Equity for Massive AI Deployment
OpenAI recently announced the creation of an ambitious joint venture, often referred to as "The Deployment Company," valued at $10 billion. This initiative aims to industrialize the distribution of its artificial intelligence solutions in the B2B sector. To achieve this, OpenAI has raised over $4 billion from 19 major investors, thereby securing a majority and decision-making position in this new structure.
Among the investors are heavyweights in private equity such as TPG, Brookfield, Advent, and Bain Capital. These strategic partnerships enable OpenAI to access a vast portfolio of over 2,000 companies, facilitating the adoption of its technologies. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of OpenAI's solutions within businesses while securing recurring revenue and strengthening its position in the B2B AI market race.
A Strategy Inspired by the "Forward Deployed Engineers" Model
OpenAI's joint venture draws inspiration from the "forward deployed engineers" model popularized by Palantir. This model involves integrating technical teams directly with clients to tailor AI solutions to their specific needs. Although costly, this approach proves highly effective in overcoming the challenges associated with integrating AI into business processes.
By partnering with private equity funds, OpenAI sidesteps traditional deployment difficulties, transforming portfolio companies into true large-scale experimentation laboratories. This setup allows for risk-sharing and aligns interests, thereby maximizing the value of investments through AI.
Towards an IPO and B2B Market Domination
This initiative is also part of a broader strategy in preparation for an initial public offering (IPO). OpenAI, valued at $852 billion following its March funding round, must demonstrate its ability to generate sustainable revenue. The B2B market, with its significant and recurring contracts, is crucial to achieving this goal.
In parallel, Anthropic has announced a similar joint venture with players such as Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, and Hellman & Friedman, valued at $1.5 billion. Both companies are converging towards a hybrid model between software publisher and business infrastructure operator, highlighting the growing importance of AI in corporate strategies.
By appointing Brad Lightcap to lead special projects, OpenAI is strengthening its commercial execution, particularly with large accounts. This internal reorganization aims to bolster the company's financial credibility while locking down the market through strategic technological dependencies.
Thus, by heavily investing in this joint venture, OpenAI is not just expanding its offerings. The company is redefining how AI integrates into the economy, positioning it as an essential component of corporate strategies.
