ChatGPT for Excel: A New Era for Spreadsheet Users
Today marks the launch of ChatGPT for Excel in beta, a tool that promises to transform the way users interact with their spreadsheets. By directly integrating ChatGPT into Excel, this add-in allows users to build and update models, run scenarios, and generate results based on existing cells and formulas. Powered by GPT-5.4, this new tool aims to enhance the efficiency of advanced users while improving consistency within teams.
At the same time, new financial data integrations are being introduced in ChatGPT, including partners such as FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, Daloopa, and S&P Global. These additions facilitate access to reliable financial data directly within the ChatGPT environment, enabling teams to spend less time on manual tasks and more on analysis and decision-making.
An AI Model Tailored for Finance
The GPT-5.4 model, also known as GPT-5.4 Thinking, is now available in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. This model, the most advanced to date, is specifically designed to meet the needs of finance professionals, particularly in terms of reasoning and financial modeling in Excel. In collaboration with industry experts, OpenAI has optimized GPT-5.4 for complex financial workflows that are often time-consuming for analysts, such as financial modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and in-depth research.
The results of this optimization are significant. In an internal evaluation by OpenAI on investment banking tasks, such as creating three-statement models with appropriate formatting and citations, performance improved from 43.7% with GPT-5 to 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking.
ChatGPT for Excel in Beta: A Powerful Tool for Professionals
The beta version of ChatGPT for Excel offers direct integration of ChatGPT into spreadsheets, allowing users to build, analyze, and update models using existing formulas and structures. Analysts, strategists, researchers, and accountants can work faster, reduce manual labor, and focus on decision-making rather than writing formulas or correcting models.
Key Features
-
Rapid Model Creation and Updates: Instead of manually creating spreadsheet models or running scenario analyses, teams can simply describe their needs in plain language. ChatGPT then takes care of creating or updating Excel models in real-time, directly within the workbook. This includes data analysis, inventory management, budgeting, all while preserving the structure and assumptions of the workbook.
-
Insights Without Manual Reconciliation: ChatGPT is capable of understanding the connections between sheets and formulas in a model, explaining changes in results, tracing and correcting errors, and showing how assumptions flow through a model. This feature is particularly useful for users inheriting existing models or needing to quickly familiarize themselves with a workbook before making decisions.
-
Logic Tracking and Result Reliability: ChatGPT explains its actions in real-time and links its responses to specific cells it references and updates. As calculations run directly in Excel, teams can trace assumptions, audit formulas, and verify how results were produced. Before any modifications, ChatGPT asks for permission, allowing users to review each step and undo changes if necessary.
Current Limitations of the Beta Version
While ChatGPT for Excel is continually improving based on user feedback, some limitations remain. At times, responses may take longer to generate while optimizations are underway. Additionally, the results produced may require cleaning or adjustment to match user formatting or layout preferences. Although ChatGPT can generate and explain formulas, complex or specific cases may still require manual intervention.
Availability
Starting today, ChatGPT for Excel in beta is accessible to ChatGPT Business users.
