Pulitzer 2026: AI Makes a Strong Showing in Award Nominations

This year, a record number of eight Pulitzer Prize winners revealed they used AI, including five winners and three finalists, according to Nieman Lab. Disclosures have been mandatory since 2024. This year, participants used AI tools and large-scale language models more frequently, primarily to search large sets of documents more quickly.

• The Wall Street Journal used an internal LLM to summarize thousands of public documents on flooding in Texas.
• Minnesota Star Tribune used ChatGPT to translate the journal of a shooter, written in faux Cyrillic, and then had the results checked by language experts.
• The Associated Press used an LLM to search through tens of thousands of leaked documents on Chinese surveillance technology.
• The New York Times used GPT-5 to verify its manual classification of SEC cryptocurrency cases.

Pulitzer administrator Marjorie Miller told Nieman Lab that the news industry now accepts that "AI is here to stay" and has a better understanding of where its use is appropriate and "when it might not be, such as in writing and editing stories in any format that could be considered for a Pulitzer Prize." The disclosure rule will also cover book entries starting next year.
