PwC Middle East: AI Reports with Fabricated Sources Revealed

PwC has reportedly published AI-generated reports containing false or fabricated sources.

After KPMG, PwC seems to be next on the list. GPTZero detected fabricated sources and erroneous claims in four reports from PwC Middle East (2024–2026). The most problematic report, titled "Transforming Governance," has an 84% chance of being entirely generated by AI. PwC uses this report to promote a product called "Citizen Pulse," claiming that governments in Denmark, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Australia rely on it. No evidence supports these claims. Whether this actually constitutes an AI-related issue is another matter.

The reports with the highest AI scores also contained the most false sources. GPTZero describes this as "Vibe Citing," where references are loosely cited, often without correct titles, URLs, or authors, and do not actually support the claims to which they are attached. This phenomenon is also occurring in academia.

PwC Middle East told the Financial Times that it takes accuracy seriously and is "updating a limited number of supporting citations." The firm did not explain how the errors made their way into the reports. GPTZero had already found fabricated sources at KPMG, Deloitte, and Ernst & Young.
