Reddit Reports Impressive Financial Results but Raises Concerns

Reddit recently released its financial results for the second quarter, revealing a solid performance that nonetheless raised concerns among investors. The company reported total revenue of $805 million, marking a significant 61% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, Reddit's net profit reached $253 million, an impressive rise of 183%. These figures exceeded Wall Street's expectations, indicating robust financial health.

Looking ahead to the next quarter, Reddit anticipates revenue between $860 million and $870 million, with pre-tax profits expected to remain strong. Normally, such optimistic forecasts would lead to a rise in the company's stock. However, to everyone's surprise, the stock fell by more than 10% in after-hours trading.

The Impact of AI on Reddit's Traffic

This unexpected decline is attributed to a warning issued by Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, in a letter to shareholders. Huffman mentioned that search referrals had been inconsistent during the quarter, and traffic showed increased volatility towards the end of the period. Despite this, he assured that Reddit's business activity remained solid.

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence in the search engine space appears to be a source of concern for investors, who fear it may affect traffic to Reddit. In 2024, Reddit signed an agreement to provide its content to Google as part of AI training. However, Google's introduction of AI-generated summaries could divert some of Reddit's audience, and the company is not yet certain about renewing this partnership.

Audience Growth Challenges for Reddit

Another challenge for Reddit lies in its audience growth. While the number of global users is increasing, the platform has seen a slight decline in the number of daily active unique users in the United States, dropping from 53.5 million to 53.2 million in the first quarter.

During the earnings call, some analysts expressed concerns about the impact of AI on Reddit's audience. One analyst pointed out that the stock decline was due to a sentiment among investors that Reddit might face user issues, particularly in the United States. The analyst also noted that unlogged traffic could be under pressure as search shifts towards AI, making it more difficult to convert unlogged users into logged-in users.

Reddit's Vision for the Future

Despite these challenges, Steve Huffman remains confident in Reddit's unique appeal. He emphasized that the platform is primarily a place for communities and conversations, and this human aspect will continue to attract users. Huffman stated that Reddit has relevant content for everyone in the United States and is striving to showcase it.

Regarding the relationship with Google, Huffman was more reserved, indicating that their collaboration dates back to before the formal data licensing agreements. He expressed his intention to maximize value for Reddit, without committing to a binary outcome regarding the future of their partnership.
