This phenomenon was illustrated earlier this year when a user asked a question on a subreddit dedicated to skincare. They were inquiring about the effectiveness of a hypochlorous acid spray for treating acne.
Among the many responses received, one of them, posted by a user under the pseudonym Primary-Taro4254, caught attention. At first glance, the comment seemed innocuous: the user explained that they had not tried the mentioned brand but recommended a similar product from Honeydew Labs that they claimed to enjoy.
Primary-Taro4254 detailed their experience, stating that the spray had soothed the redness and irritation of their skin. They also mentioned other products from the same brand, raising suspicions about the promotional nature of the message.
This type of content, while subtle, could influence Reddit users by steering them toward specific products, calling into question the authenticity of discussions on the platform. The proliferation of these AI-generated messages poses a major challenge for moderation and the credibility of online exchanges.
