Reed Hastings: AI, Workforce Halved or Expansion

Having left Netflix in June and now serving on the board of Anthropic, Reed Hastings describes an AI that he uses daily and views as a decisive lever for businesses. According to him, leaders will have to choose between halving their workforce or converting these capabilities into growth in the face of competitors. He anticipates models that are 32 times better in five years and potentially a thousand times better in ten if the pace continues, while admitting that this is not guaranteed. His comments were made during the podcast The CEO Signal.

He claims that CEOs' attitudes will outweigh size

Reed Hastings dismisses the idea that only large companies will benefit from AI. He acknowledges that big corporations are better positioned to finance intensive and costly uses, but believes this advantage could diminish if costs decrease, a development that some analysts anticipate. He argues that it is the CEOs who will make the difference and that attitude will matter more than size, with the applicability of AI being decisive. Since leaving the Netflix board in June, he has been dedicating his time to Powder Mountain in Utah, parts of which are being transformed into a luxury private community. He says he uses AI all the time to expand his knowledge and enhance the experience for members: he queries systems about how ski lifts work, sewer networks, or successful real estate projects and why, describing himself as "the student" in these sessions. He also claims to use AI to improve on-site software. Sometimes, he adds, small businesses are the most innovative and aggressive in adopting these tools, although he believes the reality "varies greatly."

He offers leaders a choice: contraction or expansion

If generative AI continues to progress rapidly, Reed Hastings believes that CEOs will face structural choices. He outlines two trajectories: halving the workforce while maintaining the same lines of business, or converting these new capabilities into development to confront competitors. For a leader, he says, AI amounts to "doubling" the workforce. According to him, many companies will try to leverage it for an advantage, with players "attacking" each other in a dynamic of creative destruction. He suggests that creating software is becoming increasingly easier and asserts that it will soon be simpler to produce just about anything.

He projects models 32 times better in 5 years, with caveats

Reed Hastings posits that cutting-edge models could be 32 times better in five years, and a thousand times better in ten years if the pace continues. However, he clarifies that this pursuit is not guaranteed, even if many industry players anticipate it. He adds that society, including leaders, is not ready for what such gains could provoke and that most humans underestimate an annual doubling, which is to say, exponential growth.
